When it comes to fitness, strength training and rehabilitation, nothing beats medicine balls for the many benefits it gives.
What exactly are they?
Similar in size with volleyballs, medicine balls usually come in standard weights of eight, ten or 12 pounds. A few balls have ropes or handles attached to them to use for exercises that involve swinging. These balls are also used when training boxers to strengthen their abdominal muscles to withstand heavy punches from their opponents. They are also used as resistance when doing sit-ups, leg raises and other lifting exercises.
Types of medicine balls
The leather-type is primarily used for abdominal work. They are highly preferred for catching exercises because leather is easier to grip and catch than others.
The soft-gel type have gel fillings confined in soft vinyl covers. Thought they are made of soft gel material, these balls do not bounce or float which makes them perfect for throwing exercises at rehabilitation centers.
There are also balls with grips attached to them to make it easier for their users to hold them. They are lightweight and is able to float which makes them perfect to use for aquatic sports and exercises.
How to choose a ball that's right for you
When purchasing a medicine ball of your own choose one that is heavy enough for resistance and to slow down your movement. Purchasing a light ball won't be so effective, while a really heavy ball will limit your accuracy, range of motion and control. Therefore, you must assess first your level of strength before making any purchase. Also, you also have to think about your goals and why do you want to purchase a ball since different balls are meant for different exercises and functions.
